For the full and proper description of the following, read Introduction to Scientology Ethics.
To move up from one condition to another there are steps. The step or steps of each condition is its formula; a formula being those actions that solve that condition in order to get to the next one up.
Confusion:
find out where one is. This includes both where one is in space as well as time.
To accomplish this an additional step may be needed, called a ‘locational’. A locational is a process used to help a person locate things and himself in the environment.
1 – Locational on the area in which one is.
2 – Compare where one is to to other areas where one was.
3 – Repeat step 1.
This is done repeatedly until, well, do this with some willing individual who is experiencing confusion and you will see.
Treason:
Find out that you are.
Enemy:
Find out who you really are.
Doubt:
1 – Inform oneself honestly of the actual intentions and activities of the individual or group, project or organisation, brushing aside all bias and rumour.
Then: 2 – Examine the statistics of the individual, group, project or organisation.
3 – Decide on the basis of “the greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics” whether or not it should be attacked, harmed, suppressed or helped.
Then: 4 – Evaluate oneself or one’s own group, project or organisation as to intentions and objectives.
5 – Evaluate one’s own or one’s group, project or organisation’s statistics.
Step 6 – Join or remain in or befriend the one which progresses toward the greatest good for the greatest number of dynamics and announce the fact publicly to both sides (unless, of course, the group or organisation being left is dangerous, such as a totalitarian state, a cult, or some such, in which cases, slip away quietly).
7 – Do everything possible to improve the actions and statistics of the person, group, project or organisation one has remained in or joined.
Step 8: Suffer on up through the conditions (that apply) in the new group if one has changed sides or the conditions of the group one has remained in if wavering from it has lowered one’s status.
Liability:
First, decide who are one’s friends. That’s for a group. As for oneself, decide if you are your own friend.
Then: 2 – Deliver an effective blow to the enemies of the group one has been pretending to be part of despite personal danger.
Step 3: Make up the damage one has done by personal contribution far beyond the ordinary demands of a group member.
Then 4 – Apply for re-entry to the group by asking the permission of each member of it to rejoin and rejoining only by majority permission, and if refused, repeating (2) and (3) and (4) until one is allowed to be a group member again.
This last step has sometimes been accomplished by passing around the written-up formula and getting signatures. Gathering signatures is not the only way, however, reacceptance is often automatic and obvious if the formula is done correctly.
Non-existence:
1 – Find a communication line. That is, locate a group or individual one would like to make contact with.
2 – Make yourself known (to them).
3 – Discover what is needed or wanted (by them).
4 – Do, produce and/or present it (for or to them).
Danger:
1 – Bypass habits or normal routines.
2 – Handle the situation and any danger in it.
3 – Assign self a danger condition ( this is for the purpose of preparing for step 4 — recognising that it was being in this condition that created the condition is important).
4 – Get in your own personal ethics by finding out what you are doing that is out-ethics and use self-discipline to correct it and get honest and straight.
Then 5 – Reorganise your life so that the dangerous situation is not continually happening to you.
Step 6 – Formulate and adopt firm policy that will hereafter detect and prevent the same situation from continuing to occur.
Emergency:
1 – For the individual: produce. For the group or organisation: promote.
2 – Change your operating basis.
3 – Economise.
Then: 4 – Prepare to deliver.
And 5 – Stiffen discipline.
Normal Operation:
First: Don’t change anything.
Ethics are very mild, the justice factor is quite mild, there are no savage actions particularly.
When a statistic betters then look it over carefully and find out what bettered it, and then do that without abandoning what you were doing before.
Every time a statistic worsens slightly, quickly find out why and remedy it.
All steps are done regularly.
Affluence:
Step 1 – Economise.
2 – Pay every bill.
Then: Invest the remainder in service facilities, make it more possible to deliver.
4 – Discover what caused the condition of Affluence and strengthen it.
Power:
1 – Don’t disconnect.
2 – Make a record of all power connections.
Power Change:
The formula for this is two-sided. Steps for the person leaving the Power position and one step for a person entering into the position.
Guy leaving: write up everything one would need to know in order for the new guy to continue in Power, while making the position as easy to occupy by them as is possible.
Then: make sure to get the write up into the hands of the new guy.
New guy: read everything recorded by the old guy and don’t change anything.
